About AspirePress

Why do we exist?

AspirePress exists to be a community of individuals focused on helping WordPress become the platform we all aspire for it to be.

Who are we?

We are open-source maintainers, business owners and dedicated community volunteers.

What do we do?

We develop packages, plugins and tools for WordPress. Our source code is published on GitHub.

What is our philosophy and vision/values?

We believe in a diverse community of builders and users. We have outlined our philosophy on what we do on our Vision and Values page.

What licenses do we use?

As an open-source project, everything we produce is public and available for anyone to use. We hold our discussions and deliberations in public, and as much as we can, we focus on being transparent in our operations and actions. Our licensing for our projects is intended to project the open source goals of the project, and allow for the greatest freedom possible.

For WordPress-specific projects (plugins, etc.)

When developing code that interacts with WordPress or other GPL code, we use the GPL v2 for our project. This license ensures compatibility with the underlying project license, and protects users by ensuring that the code remains open and available to all.

For new and greenfield projects

If we are developing a project that is new, greenfield or otherwise unencumbered by a prior license, we use the MIT License. This license provides flexibility for any user to do anything they like with the code, including to modify, redistribute, fork, or use commercially. It doesn’t require redistribution of the source like the GPL and permits forks to be licensed under any license the user deems appropriate. This, to us, is the epitome of freedom.

For existing projects we adopt, fork or contribute to

We honor the license of any project that we adopt, fork or contribute to, and we agree to license our code to that project under the terms of their license.

Default licensing

Any project that we do not license automatically becomes Public Domain. If we relicense the project or code at a later date, the license we apply only applies to releases and unreleased code from that point forward.

No commercial licenses

We do not license our code under commercial or proprietary licenses. Everything we build is open source and freely available. If we use our own code to provide a service, we may charge fees to offset the cost of providing the service; however, we do not charge for the underlying code.

If you wish to use our code and require a commercial license or support agreement, please contact us. While we cannot relicense the code under a commercial license, we can provide a support agreement through members of our community.
